This month in science we have been studying animals. Some things we have learned are life cycles, habitats, adaptations, classifications and more. We also examined non-fiction books to see what kind of information authors include in their books. We discovered there is usually a table of contents, diagrams, photos, a glossary, and fun facts!
We then took all our knowledge and researched our own animals. Some of us made presentations in Google Slides and others made their own paper non-fiction book. Take a look!

Today we went on the BEST field trip ever, to Ellis Bird Farm! Ellis Bird Farm is both a non-profit company and a working farm. We were able to learn so much about animals, our environment, and Canada's history. We started the day by collecting invertebrates in the wetlands pond. We then made some bird feeders and learned about pollinators! We even got to see a live bee hive. We also learned about owls, purple martins, swallows, and more! We already knew a lot as we have been studying different animals in our science unit. This helped us to understand what we've learned a little bit better. Ellis Bird Farm is free to explore and is open all summer.
We have been patiently waiting for the snow to become the perfect stickiness for snowmen! Today it was finally ready, and we thankfully had outdoor gym! We formed teams and set off into the sunshine to make a snow creation. After much hard work and creativity, here are the results! Ms. Graham judged our snowmen and we each received an award. First up we have Frosty. Frosty was created by Evan, Cooper, and Jeremiah with some help from Ms.G. It won the award for Biggest Snowman!!! It is HUGE! Next up we have Ruby and Frank. They were awarded "Best Snowman Faces" as they put lots of detail into their faces. They were created by Makenzie, Kylie, and Cheamus. The winner of the "Most Creative" snowman went to Centipeder... Centipeder is a centipede that has a snowman riding on top. So creative! This was created by Brock, Brody, Derek, Abiona, and Braxton Last but not least, we have our winner of the "Most Cute and Smallest" award, the kitty! This kitty was created by Ava, Lilie, Emmy, and Bella.
This is one of the most hilarious writing projects we do in grade 3. For the 100th day of school, we use an Aging App to transform our 8 year old faces into 100 year old faces. We then imagine how our life might be different at 100 years old. We talked about how our bodies would change, our appearance, our abilities, and our interests! Next, we write all about our life as a 100 year old. The results are quite funny. Enjoy!
We are so fortunate here at IREC to have such excellent programming for Physical Education. We get 40 minutes a day and there are so many cool things we can do. We were lucky to catch a warm day and got to go outside and snowshoe! We loved every minute of it and can't wait to go again.
We are also taking swimming lessons through Burman University Pool in Lacombe! We get to learn a really important life skill while also being active and having fun. It is a great way to be active in the winter too. We are so fortunate. Check out some photos of all the fun! Today we had Polar Express Day. On this special day we do a few different things. We started the day off by flashlight reading with just the glow of the Christmas lights and the fire channel on the smart board. It was so cozy for reading! Especially after the snow we got last night. Did we mention we all wore our pajamas? Here are a few pictures. Scroll down to read more about our day. In the afternoon we read the book! It was magical and we loved the illustrations. We then got to work on some different activities. First, we used our comprehension skills to retell the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Then we did some math word problems related to the Polar Express. We also put words into ABC order aqnd wrote what WE would do if we got pulled onto the Polar Express. After lunch we watched the movie! We also all got our very own bell from Ms.Graham. Did we mention there were TONS of treats? We had hot chocolate, cookies, fruit that looked like candy canes, and popcorn! YUM!
Can you hear the Christmas bells? We recently read The Wild Robot as part of the #GlobalReadAloud. This book was AMAZING and we are so sad to see it end. We are thrilled that there is a sequel coming out in 2018. We have already begun making predictions. To finish up the book, we used Google Drawings to create our own drawings of Roz.
We have been doing lots this past month. Grade 3 is busy! Here are some highlights from the past few weeks.
We had 2 amazing students receive Leadership Awards for September; Braxton and Derek!
Braxton shows the 7 habits while reading with his reading buddy. He models the expectations and uses positive words to encourage his buddy. He is a kind friend to all. Derek demonstrates Habit #5 Seek First To Understand then to be Understood as he is always thoughtfully listening to his classmates and teacher. He is proactive in that he is quick to help wherever he is needed. Great work, boys! Keep it up! We have been learning about rocks and minerals as part of our science unit. We have also been learning the 7 habits and how to be bucket fillers. We are also learning about making a difference in our community.
To combine these things, we learned about a special project called the #KindnessRocksProject. Essentially the goal is to paint rocks with lovely messages and leave them for others to find. We brainstormed things we might want to see on a rock if we were having a bad day, then we set to work. We wanted our rocks to be colourful and happy so that people would be cheered up by them. Today we went on a walk around our community and left our rocks for others to find. We hope we make someone's day! If you follow this link you will see a video of our project. Below are pictures of our work. Enjoy! |
